PLYMOUTH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN, PCAD, 1970-1972

Being at Plymouth College of Art and Design, Wolsdon Street Annexe, in the early 1970s was very, as we used to say, “cool.” my name is Steve Johnson and I had a whale of a time and learnt a lot too. This was in the days before the present site of PCAD at Drake Circus was built.

NAMES I REMEMBER: BETTY FOX, TREFOR ? BALL?, KEITH SPEARE, PETER TRENCHARD OF JERSEY, NOEL? OF SOUTH AFRICA, JOHN BAKER, JAN STRETHANS?, JASON?, JEREMY ? THEN , ANDREA ? AND CHRIS ABRAHAM, AND ROGER EDWARDS FROM THE YEAR ABOVE, AND THEN, BARRY (FROM YEAR BELOW)

It’s the faces I still recall and the fun and hard work we had.

TEACHERS WERE: DICK HILL, RUSSELL MILLIGAN, TONY MEARS ( sadly now passed away), KEITH RICHARDS ( sadly now passed away), MIKE McCOY (cine, on a Monday evening till 8 I think..ouch!!), Rosemary ?? (graphics), Tex Rundle (business studies), Mary Peter ( art history at Palace Court), Caretaker was Pete, Technician was Jim Badley? HEAD OF DEPT WAS IVOR INNES, THEN ROY SIMS.

If you know these people, you’ll recognize them in these pictures. I hope you enjoy them all these years later. What has become of us all who started out in a time before PCs, when Windows were to be painted, and digital was something to do with a finger.

It was a safe and innocent world. I was lucky enough to work with Betty Fox until 1988, and to work sort of parallel to Keith Speare until the same time too.
